Academic Achievement Grades

These scores are the average scores for all students taking the TCAP test in grades 3 and 4.  For all subjects to get an A, this score called the NCE score* must be greater than or equal to 55.  For a B, the average score must be 50 -54, for a C between 45-49, for a D, between 40-44, and an F , less than or equal to 39.

Value-Added Scores

Value-added scores only apply to the 4th grade.  This value is the growth of a student’s NCE* score from 3rd grade to 4th grade.  If Jimmy scored an NCE of 89 in 3rd grade in Reading, he must score an 89 on the Reading test in 4th grade to have made one full year’s growth. A score higher than 89 indicates more than one year’s growth and less than 79 demonstrates less than a year’s growth. A school’s value-added score is determined by adding the gains or losses of all the students in 4th grade.  That number is divided by the total number of students who are in the 4th grade. A score of 0 means that the average NCE growth was 1 year for all students in 4th grade.  A score of 0 converts to a grade of C, or average.

The value-added grades provide valuable insight as to the success of a grade level within the school, however, it is important to remember that the grade level consists of individual students that each have their own individual academic needs. Using this information the administration and faculty work hard to ensure that each student is provided with the assistance he/she requires to meet or exceed grade level standards.
