ATTENDANCE
Attendance is very important and helps develop a life pattern that is either good or bad. Please remember to send written documentation too the attention of the school attendance secretary when your child returns from an absence. A doctor’s note is required for an illness lasting more than 2 days and the principal must approve other absences of 3 or more days. Chronic absences will not be excused without proper documentation. Five or more unexcused absences may result in parents being summoned to court by the Truancy Board. For further explanation, see ATTENDANCE POLICY in Cheatham County Student Handbook.
Refer to County Handbook online.
Students must bring a written excuse for absences. Excused absences include:
1. Death in the family
2. Doctor’s statement for illness
3. Religious holiday
4. Court appearance
5. Judgment of the office for:
a. Illness without a doctor’s statement
· When the principal determines the parent has written an excessive number of absentee excuses, the student may be required to have a doctor’s statement for further absences and tardiness.
b. Personal problems will be considered on an
individual basis.
Head Lice – Students with head lice or nits shall be
excused on the day lice or nits are found and one day
immediately following. TO BE READMITTED
AFTER BEING ABSENT WITH HEAD LICE, A
PARENT OR GUARDIAN MUST ACCOMPANY
THE STUDENT TO THE OFFICE. TO BE
READMITTED THE STUDENT MUST BE LICE
AND NIT FREE. The school will allow only two
days of excused absences for each occurrence.
When a student has received 5 unexcused absences, the parent or guardian will receive a letter from the school. Upon receiving such a letter, it is the responsibility of the parent or guardian to contact the office and correct the unexcused absences.
If the unexcused absences cannot be corrected, the matter will be referred to the Central Office. The parents or guardian and student may be required to attend a Truancy Hearing.
Attendance shall become a relevant factor when excessive absenteeism becomes an educational issue. The principal and teacher(s) involved shall hold a conference with the parents/guardian. A decision shall be made according to the provisions of the Promotion and Retention Policy (4.603).
Attendance certificates will be awarded to students who have outstanding attendance. To receive this certificate, the student must have been absent no more than one day.
Tardiness
School begins at 7:45a.m., and the tardy bell rings at this time. Students who arrive late should be accompanied by an adult into the school building and stop at the office. Late students MUST have a tardy slip to give their teachers before they enter the class. It is important that your child arrives on time because:
1. Attendance is taken.
2. Morning assignments are given.
3. Children need to develop the habit of BEING ON TIME early in life.
